Planting the seed. UPDATE ON CHRIS (Sep. 5, 2017)

Christopher is a 27 year old homeless man in the city of Mesa, Arizona. I first had the opportunity to meet him several months back on another “SelflessSelfie” post I made. You can read all about Chris here. The little things in life…(Chris- May 8, 2017)

Although I may not have the magic words to help Chris want to better his life, I can lead by example and show him the love and kindness that Jesus has shown me. We spent about two hours together yesterday evening catching up on life and enjoying the conversation we were having. I even found out that Chris’s cousin played on my hockey team with me for a year or two. He likes to rap, so we sat there on a bench and free-styled over some beats I played on my phone. He also showed me some songs he has written and I encouraged him to keep writing.

Chris admits he is still struggling with his addictions and finding a way to get off the streets. His grandma has been letting him come to her house and stay on the weekends to shower and get cleaned up, but come Monday he is back on the streets flying a sign asking for money, food or work.

We talked about how his life could become so much more fulfilling if he could get off the drugs and get his mind and heart in the right place. He agreed with what I was saying and realizes that the path he is on, is not leading him where he wants to be in life.

I told him the first thing he needs to do is to get clean from the drugs he is using. I believe his judgment and state of mind is fogged with all the years of using. If he could just get sober he might realize how deep of a hole he has dug himself into. Maybe one day he could even counsel others on the negative effects of drug use and help prevent others from being in the situation he himself was once in.

ISAIAH 61:1 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;”

Like I said earlier, I may not be able to talk Chris out of his lifestyle right away. I can show him the grace and love of Jesus by continuing to be his friend and help him when I can. Joy in the Lord is contagious, by showing him the Bible and what Christ has done for us will plant a seed in his mind. Continuing to share the gospel with him will hopefully get that seed to start sprouting and eventually turn into something beautiful.

ACTS 20:28 “Pay careful attention to yourselves and to ALL the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.”
