My Family and I headed up to our favorite little get away spot for the 4th of July this year. We’ve been blessed and own a cabin up in Pine-top, AZ. My great grandpa Roy bought the cabin in the 50’s and it still remains in the family today. It’s our second home and is filled with many fond memories from times in our past. Our own little sanctuary.
I love being able to go up north away from the city-life and enjoy God’s beautiful nature. Yesterday, as I was driving around running errands I saw a man with a big white beard and a gorgeous dog standing on the corner of the road. He was holding a large sign that read, “Our Father is looking for compassion! In our kind hearts do we have any? May God bless us.”
I thought this would be a great opportunity to pull over, buy this guy a meal and talk with him for a bit. Plus the dude kinda looked like Si Robertson from “Duck Dynasty” and was wearing a STYX t-shirt so he had to be cool right?
I walked up, shook his hand and he introduced himself as “Purple” and his dogs name was Laddie. Purple is originally from Indiana but came to Arizona around ten years ago. I asked how he ended up being homeless and he told me he was an Apostle for God. Money wasn’t important to him, his only goal in life is to show others about Christ.
Purple is very intelligent and knows a lot about the Bible. We talked and laughed for over an hour about different topics in life and Theology. He was great at explaining things in a way that were relatable and easy to understand.
I don’t have the balls to live the lifestyle my new friend Purple does. I can’t imagine dropping everything and leaving all my possessions behind to live on the streets. Purple HAS made that bold and brave choice and I admire him tremendously for that. He reminds me a lot of the Apostle Paul. Much like Paul, they were both pretty well off in life before they began their mission. Both men did not have a good relationship with God at points in their lives. My favorite thing about the two though, is they both gave up a comfortable life to literally travel with little to no possessions, preaching the word of God and the grace of Jesus Christ.
After I grabbed Purple some food from a nearby place and a snack for his dog, I went to shake his hand and he opened his arms and gave me a big hug. I got in my Truck and headed back to our cabin. It was the 4th of July and we had a party to go to at the White Mountain Country Club. Back to my comfortable lifestyle…
I learned a lot from talking with Purple that day and I know God intended for us to meet. Please pray for my new buddy and his dog. That they are safe wherever they go and that Purple can get the message of Jesus to as many people as possible.
2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.
