Once a week God has given me the idea to find a random person and do something kind for. In the process, I hope to make that person smile and feel loved for the hour or so we are together.
Today I worked a half day at my fathers shop and set off around noon to drive around, and find someone in need. It was 112 degrees when I left the shop keep in mind, so being without a home on a day like today would be miserable..
I came across a man standing in the scorching sun holding a sign asking for money. I walked up to “Richie” and introduced myself. He told me his name “Richie” but it was mumbled and his mouth was full of something. He was eating a pancake someone had just given him! haha.
Richie was full from the food he’d been given so I got us some ice water and some cash to help him get a motel room to sleep.
He is 65 years old and was born and raised here in Arizona. Richie enlisted in the military at the age of 17. He spent 9 months in Germany before heading to Vietnam to fight in the war. Richie wasn’t on the front lines in hand to hand combat but was assigned to a “Missile Command Crew” that helped shoot down enemy planes using advanced missiles. Richie lost many friends in Vietnam, he said platoons would go out maybe 12 guys and sometimes only 6 or 7 would return.
After Richie’s time in the army, he started working at a chrome plating company here in Arizona. He worked there for many, many years until he hurt his back and was unable to keep a steady job. Richie’s older brother and sister had a house here and let Richie move in with them because of his condition. Unfortunately they both passed away a couple years back and the house was lost since no one was there to pay the bills. Richie Has been homeless ever since.
Richie had a great attitude and a really outgoing personality, We talked for about 45 minutes before I had to leave for an appointment I had. I asked if I could give him a new Bible and he graciously accepted. He paused and asked me “Where do you think I should start?, I have never read a Bible before”. I was taken back a bit, but realized my opportunity and showed him the Gospels of “Matthew, Mark, Luke and John”. I told him that would be a great place to begin! The gospels are an account of Jesus’s time here on Earth and the Story of His death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins.
Like it say’s in (Mark 2 :15) “Now it happened, as He was dining in Levi’s house, that many tax collectors and sinners also sat together with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many, and they followed Him.” If Jesus were here today in the flesh, I believe he would hangout with the homeless, the alcoholics, the drug users and sinners. He would show them love, kindness and the grace of God. We are all saved by the same Grace, the same blood, the same Savior. Be like Christ and this world we call “home” for the time being, will surely become a better place.
